APPLE BROWN BETTY



INGREDIENTS:
4 slices dry bread
1/4 melted butter
4-6 apples peeled, cored and sliced
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup water

Cut the bread into very small cubes. Toss with the butter. Put 1/3 of these cubes in a shallow1-1/2 quart baking dish. Cover with 1/2 the apples and 1/2 the other ingredients except the water. Repeat and top with the last of the bread cubes and the water.

Bake in moderate hot oven at 375° for 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve with cream.

YIELD: 4 to 6 servings
